WordPress Introduces Gutenberg 14.2

WordPress’ most advanced block editor, commonly referred to as Gutenberg first launched in December 2018. The last three years have seen enormous growth for Gutenberg as it became

the minimum viable product to a mature project, closer to creating a full-site editing experience.

As the new default content editor for posts and pages, Gutenberg took the place of the former WordPress classic editor, which used TinyMCE (WYSIWYG). Instead of adding content to a single region of information, Gutenberg allows for the addition of separate “blocks” of content.

As on September 2022, WordPress has released an updated version of Gutenberg 14.2 that offers enhanced user experience and editing flow.

Writing Flow Improvement

The writing flow has been enhanced in a number of ways in Gutenberg 14.2:

  • The sibling and line inserters now have an animation effect that looks more natural.
  • Multiple block selection now has a more unified visual appearance.
  • When the user is typing, the block inserter is now hidden, eliminating visual clutter.

Letter Spacing

The distance between each letter in a word is referred to as letter spacing. The letter spacing in the screenshot above is 14 points and this can be adjusted by the user manually.

For the header components, being able to change the spacing between characters is crucial since some fonts can cause the spacing to be excessively close. A publisher can now modify how much space is being used by the Global Styles interface.

Polished Calendar Block

The Calendar block’s background, link, and text colours can now be customised. The Calendar block will now also be affected by global styles, and it will take after its parent block’s default text colour.

Auto-Completing Links

The ability to autocomplete URLs in any block is now available. Blocks previously had to explicitly opt into this functionality using __experimentalSlashInserter whereas links will now be autocompleted everywhere. The editor’s autocompletion is activated by using the [[shortcut.

Apart from the above-listed improvements made to enhance user experience, the Gutenberg 14.2 update also makes improvements in code quality, introduces bug fixes components, changes in Global Styles, etc.
